“Driving in Spiti is not a joke, but we never felt fear while sitting in the traveller.”

There are some road trips where the destination is the biggest attraction. In Spiti, the road itself becomes half the story.

For Vinay Meti and Soumya Tubachi, eight days in the Himalayas meant winding through dramatic mountain passes, crossing high-altitude villages and watching the landscape change almost every few kilometres. Their journey took them from Manali to Kaza, with stops at Kunzum Pass, Komik, Hikkim, Langza, Key Monastery, Tabo, Dhankar, Pin Valley and Chandratal.

Here’s how Vinay and Soumya’s Spiti adventure unfolded.

Manali: The Calm Before the Mountain Adventure

The trip began with an overnight journey from Delhi to Manali. As the tempo climbed towards Himachal Pradesh, city streets slowly gave way to winding mountain roads, dense forests and glimpses of the Beas River. By the time Vinay and Soumya arrived, the Himalayan atmosphere had already begun setting the tone.

Their first day remained relaxed, with visits to Hadimba Temple, the Club House and Old Manali. Wandering through its cafés and little shops offered an easy introduction to the mountains before the much more demanding journey into Spiti began the following morning.

Kunzum Pass: When the Road Becomes the Adventure

The drive from Manali to Kaza marked the real beginning of their Spiti adventure. After passing through the Atal Tunnel, the landscape opened into the stark terrain around Chatru and Batal. Patches of green appeared between enormous mountains, creating a striking contrast against the otherwise barren landscape.

Then came Kunzum Pass at 14,931 feet. The air grew colder as the mountains became more imposing, while every turn offered another reason to reach for the camera. At Losar, the first village of Spiti, they got their first glimpse of the region's Tibetan culture before continuing towards Kaza.

Kaza: Where Every Village Feels Extraordinary

Kaza became their base for exploring some of Spiti's most famous high-altitude destinations. The day began at Komik, followed by Hikkim, where they visited the world's highest post office. Sending a postcard from such a remote corner turned an ordinary activity into one of those travel stories worth retelling.

Langza brought another unforgettable scene, with its giant Buddha statue standing against the mountains. The journey continued to Key Monastery before taking them towards Kibber and Chicham Bridge. From the dramatic bridge, the deep gorge and surrounding mountains stretched out below, making the long drive feel completely worthwhile.

Tabo, Dhankar & Pin Valley: A Day of Ancient Stories

The next day took Vinay and Soumya deeper into Spiti's cultural landscape. At Tabo, they explored the 1,020-year-old monastery, known for its ancient artwork and long-standing Buddhist traditions. The quiet surroundings offered a completely different experience from the dramatic mountain drives.

From Tabo, they continued towards Dhankar, where the monastery stood dramatically above the valley. The route then entered Pin Valley, adding another visual contrast with its distinctive terrain and settlements. By the end of the day, they had seen another side of Spiti beyond its famous high-altitude villages.

Chandratal: The Moon Lake Moment

The final major adventure took them towards Chandratal, situated at around 4,300 metres among the Chandra Bhaga mountain range. As the road climbed, the landscape became quieter and more dramatic, eventually revealing the famous crescent-shaped lake.

The clear water reflected the surrounding mountains and sky, while changing light gave the lake different shades throughout the day. After several days of rugged landscapes and long drives, Chandratal felt like a fitting climax to the journey.

Why Vinay Recommends His Spiti Trip with Thrillophilia

For us at Thrillophilia, organising a Spiti group trip means planning for much more than sightseeing. The terrain is demanding, distances are long, and every transfer needs experienced people who understand mountain travel.

Vinay's itinerary brought together Kaza's high-altitude villages, Tabo, Dhankar, Pin Valley and Chandratal without compromising the flow of the journey. Our team remained available for queries, while Spiti Destination Expert Abdul Basit helped coordinate the experience behind the scenes. Vinay also specifically appreciated Mr Kamal for his guidance throughout the trip and Mr Sachin for his confident driving across Spiti's difficult roads.

His complete testimonial captures why the experience worked so well:

“Had an amazing Spiti group trip with Thrillophilia; the itinerary was very well planned, and our queries were resolved very quickly. Special mention to Mr Kamal for helping and guiding us throughout the trip and the great driving skills of Mr Sachin. Driving in Spiti is not a joke, but we never felt fear while sitting in the traveller; thanks for showing us around safely.”

For us, that is what a well-planned Spiti journey should feel like. The mountains can remain wild and thrilling while travellers feel safe enough to enjoy every turn.
