When Aishwarya Salapura and Akshaya planned their eight-day trip, they wanted to experience Tokyo, Disneyland, Osaka, Kyoto, and Nara without constantly worrying about the planning behind it. What followed was a packed journey through futuristic city streets, traditional neighbourhoods, colourful attractions, famous food districts, and some of Japan's most recognisable sights.

From the bright streets of Tokyo to a full day at Disneyland, followed by the historic charm of Kyoto and Nara and the lively streets of Osaka, every part of the trip brought something different. By the time they were ready to leave Japan, eight days had somehow felt far too short.

Tokyo Sightseeing Took Them From Shibuya to Asakusa

Tokyo was their first destination, and the city offered a packed introduction to modern Japan. Their airport-to-hotel transfer was arranged beforehand, giving them an easy start after their international flight. Their sightseeing days took them through some of the city's most recognisable neighbourhoods, each offering a completely different experience.

Shibuya Crossing was one of the essential Tokyo experiences, with its famous intersection surrounded by enormous screens, department stores, cafés, and busy pedestrian streets. They could also explore Asakusa and Senso-ji Temple, where the Kaminarimon Gate leads towards Nakamise-dori. The traditional shopping street is lined with Japanese snacks, souvenirs, crafts, and small local stores before opening towards the temple complex.

The city's modern side comes alive around Shinjuku, with towering buildings, restaurants, department stores, neon-lit streets, and observation decks. Harajuku offered another contrast through Takeshita Street, known for fashion stores, colourful cafés, and Japanese youth culture. A visit to Akihabara would bring them into Tokyo's anime and gaming culture, with multi-storey electronics shops, manga stores, arcades, and themed cafés. Tokyo Skytree added spectacular views across the enormous metropolitan area, giving the duo another perspective on the city.

Disneyland Turned One Day Into a Full Adventure

Disneyland was the highlight of Aishwarya's Japan trip. They spent a full day exploring Tokyo Disneyland, moving through themed areas, attractions, entertainment zones, shops, and restaurants. The park combines familiar Disney characters with Japanese hospitality and meticulous attention to detail.

They could explore Fantasyland, where classic Disney stories come alive through rides and elaborate settings. Tomorrowland offered futuristic attractions, while Adventureland brought exploration-themed experiences. They also had plenty of opportunities to photograph the colourful surroundings and Disney characters. World Bazaar, located near the entrance, provided another popular stop with its covered streets, Disney merchandise, themed shops, and restaurants.

The entertainment added another layer to the day. Parades, music, character appearances, themed decorations, and nighttime shows kept the experience moving well beyond the rides. Aishwarya described the day as “mesmerising” and said, “We had real fun.” It became the single experience she specifically identified as the highlight of the entire holiday.

Osaka Brought Street Food, Shopping and Bright City Nights

Osaka gave the duo another completely different Japanese city to explore. Their sightseeing brought them towards Dotonbori, one of Osaka's most famous districts, packed with illuminated signs, restaurants, shopping streets, and the Dotonbori Canal. The famous Glico Running Man sign became an obvious photo stop, while the surrounding streets offered endless opportunities to discover Osaka's famous food culture.

They could try takoyaki, the city's famous octopus-filled snack, and okonomiyaki, a savoury pancake prepared with cabbage and different toppings. They could also explore Shinsaibashi, one of Osaka's biggest shopping districts, with covered shopping arcades filled with fashion stores, cafés, restaurants, cosmetics shops, and Japanese brands.

Osaka Castle added a historical stop to their city experience. The castle is surrounded by gardens, stone walls, moats, and walking paths, while its museum explains Osaka's history and the castle's significance. By evening, Osaka became even more vibrant, with restaurants lighting up the streets and shopping areas staying busy. It was easy to understand why Aishwarya wrote, “The days in Osaka were really good as well.”

Nara Added Deer, Temples and Old-World Japan

Their journey also took them to Nara, another destination that offered a completely different experience. The city's biggest attraction is Nara Park, where hundreds of deer roam freely through the grounds. Visitors can buy special deer crackers and feed them while walking through the park, making the animals an unusual and memorable part of the sightseeing experience.

Nearby, Todai-ji Temple is one of Nara's most important landmarks. The enormous wooden temple houses the Great Buddha, a colossal bronze statue that dominates the main hall. The duo could also explore the surrounding temple grounds and gardens, where traditional architecture and forested paths created a slower pace compared with Tokyo and Osaka.

Nara's historic character made it a natural contrast to the bright cityscapes elsewhere on the trip. Instead of skyscrapers and shopping streets, the day centred around temples, deer, gardens, and Japanese cultural heritage. Along with Kyoto, Nara added the traditional side of Japan to a holiday that already included major cities and Disneyland.
