There is a point during a Ladakh trip when you stop looking for landmarks and simply stare out of the window.
The mountains keep changing colour. The roads seem endless. Villages appear out of nowhere and disappear just as quickly. Somewhere between the long drives and the high passes, the journey becomes bigger than any sightseeing stop.
That was the kind of trip Avneet Kaur and Itishree Nigam found themselves on.
They had come to Ladakh expecting beautiful landscapes. What they did not expect was how different each day would feel from the last. One morning, they were standing at the confluence of two rivers. Another day, they were crossing one of the world's highest roads. By the end of the trip, they had watched Pangong change colours, explored remote villages near the border, and found themselves in places that felt impossibly far away from everyday life.
And strangely enough, some of the most memorable moments happened while simply sitting in the car and watching Ladakh unfold outside the window.
The Roads Told Their Own Story

In Ladakh, getting somewhere is often as exciting as arriving.
The drives rarely felt like transfers. They felt like experiences.
One day brought the meeting point of the Indus and Zanskar Rivers, where two completely different shades of water flowed side by side. Another brought Magnetic Hill, one of those places where everyone knows the science but still enjoys testing the illusion anyway.
Then came Khardung La.
The excitement inside the vehicle was impossible to miss as they climbed higher and higher towards one of Ladakh's most famous mountain passes. Like most travellers, they stopped for photos, admired the views, and enjoyed the mandatory cup of chai and Maggi that somehow tastes better at high altitude.
What made the journey special wasn't any single stop.
It was the feeling that every few kilometres revealed a completely new landscape.
The Ladakh Everyone Dreams About

Of course, some places become famous for a reason.
Nubra Valley looked almost unreal. Sand dunes appeared where mountains should have been. Double-humped camels wandered across the cold desert. The scenery felt unlike anything the two friends had seen before.
Then came Pangong.
Every traveller arrives with expectations because they have already seen hundreds of photographs online.
The surprising part is that the lake still manages to exceed them.
The water kept changing shades depending on the light. At times, it looked deep blue. At others, it seemed almost turquoise. The surrounding mountains reflected across the surface, creating views that made everyone pause for a few moments before reaching for their cameras.
Looking back on the experience, Avneet shared:
"Had an amazing trip. Apart from some of the group travellers included in our trip, everything else was wonderful. The locals were amazing, and our driver, Bhaiya Rafeeq, was a supportive and caring person. Overall, we enjoyed it a lot!”
The Ladakh Most Travellers Never See
If Pangong was the postcard version of Ladakh, Hanle felt like a completely different world.
The roads became quieter.
The villages became smaller.
The crowds almost disappeared.
There were moments when Avneet and Itishree could look around and see nothing but mountains stretching in every direction.
The visit to the Hanle Observatory added another layer to the experience. Standing in one of India's most remote regions while looking at a facility dedicated to studying the universe felt strangely fitting. Everything about Hanle makes you feel small, in the best possible way.
Then came Umling La.
The signboard announcing the world's highest motorable road has become famous among travellers, but reaching it is still an experience that feels special. The excitement of standing at nearly 19,000 feet above sea level is difficult to describe until you're actually there. For Avneet and Itishree, it became one of the defining moments of their Ladakh adventure.

Chushul, Rezang La, Chumathang, and the roads connecting them became some of those unexpected highlights. The Rezang La War Memorial added a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made in this remote region. Chumathang offered a softer contrast, with its green patches, natural hot springs, and peaceful atmosphere after days of dramatic mountain landscapes.
By the time the two friends returned to Leh, Ladakh no longer felt like a bucket-list destination they had visited. It felt like a place they had experienced.
The trip was planned by Vivek Singh from the Thrillophilia team, while the on-ground experience was made memorable by Rafeeq, whose support and local insights remained one of the biggest highlights of the journey.
Eight days later, Avneet and Itishree left with thousands of photographs, countless stories, and a version of Ladakh that went far beyond the usual tourist trail.
