For Saurabh Singh Kaira and his friends – Surabhi Singh, Shwetank Singh, and Shalu Rai – the planning had already been taken care of long before they landed in Ladakh.
Over the next seven days, the friends would find themselves crossing high-altitude mountain passes, standing beside lakes that seemed to change colour with the light, driving through remote valleys, and discovering corners of Ladakh that felt completely disconnected from the outside world.
All they really had to do was pack their bags, board a flight, and set off on a journey through one of the most extraordinary landscapes in the country.
Hanle: Where Ladakh Feels Infinite
Most Ladakh itineraries stop after Pangong.
This one kept going.
The drive towards Hanle carried the group into one of the most remote and fascinating regions of the country. Traffic disappeared, settlements became increasingly sparse, and the landscape opened into vast stretches of mountains and open plains.
Along the way, the group visited the Rezang La War Memorial, a powerful tribute to the soldiers who fought during the 1962 Indo-China conflict. Surrounded by stark mountain scenery, the memorial added a deeper layer to the journey, reminding them that these beautiful landscapes have also witnessed remarkable stories of courage.
Hanle itself felt unlike anywhere else they had visited.
Known for its clear skies and high-altitude location, the village is home to one of the world's highest astronomical observatories. As evening settled over the valley, the mountains gradually faded into darkness while countless stars appeared overhead. Far away from city lights, the sky seemed larger and brighter than most travellers ever get to experience.
For the group, Hanle became one of those unexpected highlights that often end up defining an entire trip.
Nubra Valley and Pangong Delivered Ladakh's Greatest Contrasts
The journey to Nubra Valley began with a drive across Khardung La Pass, one of the world's highest motorable roads.
As the vehicle climbed higher, the scenery shifted dramatically. Snow-dusted peaks surrounded the road while deep valleys stretched endlessly below. Every turn seemed to reveal another reason to stop for photographs.
Beyond the pass, Ladakh revealed yet another surprise.
Nubra Valley felt completely different from the landscapes around Leh. Sand dunes stretched across the valley floor while the Shyok River flowed nearby, creating a setting where deserts and mountains somehow coexist. The group explored Hunder's famous dunes, watched double-humped Bactrian camels move across the landscape, and enjoyed a side of Ladakh that few first-time visitors expect.
The following day brought another dramatic change in scenery.
The road to Pangong followed the Shyok River through rugged terrain before finally revealing one of the most famous lakes in the Himalayas. Pangong's reputation is well deserved. The lake seemed to change colour throughout the day while the surrounding mountains reflected across its vast surface.
As the group spent time along the shoreline, it became clear why travellers from around the world make the journey to reach this remote corner of Ladakh.
The Roads That Connected Everything
Some of the best moments of the trip happened between destinations.
The drive through Sham Valley introduced the group to several of Ladakh's most recognisable landmarks. They watched the Indus and Zanskar rivers merge at Sangam Point, experienced the optical illusion of Magnetic Hill, visited Gurudwara Pathar Sahib, and explored the famous SECMOL campus.
Later in the journey, the road back to Leh continued delivering memorable experiences. A stop at Chumathang Hot Springs offered a chance to relax amidst the mountains, while Thiksey Monastery provided sweeping views across the Indus Valley. The visit to Rancho School added a familiar touch for anyone who remembered the film 3 Idiots.
Together, these stops helped create a journey that felt layered and varied rather than focused on only a handful of attractions.
