Meghalaya has a way of making a family holiday feel like an adventure story. For Vishwasshetty Vishwas and family, their six-day journey brought together dramatic waterfalls, forest trails, living root bridges and the crystal-clear waters of Dawki.

The journey covered Shillong, Cherrapunji, Mawlynnong, Shnongpdeng and Jowai, with private transfers making it easy for the family to move between destinations. From their first glimpse of Umiam Lake to the final visit to Kamakhya Temple, the itinerary kept changing its scenery. Shillong Began the Journey with Umiam Lake
The family began their Meghalaya holiday with a scenic drive from Guwahati towards Shillong. Their first major stop was Umiam Lake, also known as Barapani, where the road opened up to a beautiful reservoir surrounded by the green hills of the East Khasi region. It was an easy introduction to Meghalaya, with the family getting their first taste of the state's lush landscapes before continuing towards Shillong.
After reaching Shillong, they checked into their hotel and had the evening to themselves. The relaxed start gave them time to settle in before the sightseeing picked up pace. Cherrapunji Turned the Trip into a Waterfall Chase
The next day brought the family to Cherrapunji, and this was where the scenery really started showing off. Their route included Elephant Falls and the Mawkdok Dympep Valley Viewpoint before continuing towards Wei Sawdong Falls. The family then made their way to Nohkalikai Falls, India's tallest plunge waterfall, followed by the famous Seven Sisters Falls. Each stop offered a different view of Meghalaya, from deep valleys and dense greenery to dramatic cascades.
The day continued underground with visits to Mawsmai and Arwah Caves. Inside the limestone formations, the family explored Meghalaya's fascinating natural geology and saw the fossils associated with Arwah Caves. After a full day of sightseeing, their private transfer took them back to their Cherrapunji hotel. With two nights planned there, they had enough time to enjoy the region without constantly packing and unpacking.
The Double Decker Root Bridge Made Them Work for the View
Day three was reserved for one of Meghalaya's most memorable experiences, the Nongriat trek. The family travelled to Tyrna Village, where the trail began winding through forests and across bridges towards the famous Double Decker Living Root Bridge. The trek brought plenty of greenery and natural scenery along the way, making the journey itself a major part of the experience.
Reaching the bridge was followed by the equally memorable return journey. The family had to climb around 3,000 steps while making their way back towards Tyrna Village. It was certainly a more active day than the sightseeing drives, yet it offered a completely different way to experience Meghalaya. After the trek, their private transfer brought them back to Cherrapunji for another comfortable night.
Mawlynnong and Dawki Delivered the Crystal-Clear Moment
From Cherrapunji, the family continued towards Shnongpdeng with a stop at Mawlynnong. They explored the village, saw its famous Balancing Rock and continued towards Riwai Village to experience its Single Decker Living Root Bridge. These bridges are created from the roots of living trees, shaped over years into natural pathways that remain part of the local landscape.
The biggest highlight came later at Dawki, where the family enjoyed a boat ride on the Umngot River. The famously clear water created a completely different atmosphere from the waterfalls and forests they had experienced earlier. After the boat ride, they continued to their stay in Shnongpdeng, surrounded by the quieter riverside setting. It was the kind of evening that gave the family plenty of time to slow down after several busy days.
Krang Suri Added One More Waterfall to the Collection
Their return towards Shillong brought another scenic stop at Jowai and the stunning Krang Suri Waterfalls. After seeing so many waterfalls around Cherrapunji, the family still had plenty of reason to stop and admire this one. The turquoise-blue water surrounded by dense greenery made Krang Suri a fitting final sightseeing highlight.
The route also passed through Dawki, where travellers could choose activities such as ziplining, kayaking and boating. After exploring the area, the family continued towards Shillong and checked into their hotel for their final night. A Smooth Finish with Kamakhya Temple
On their final morning, the family checked out from Shillong and began their journey towards Guwahati. Their last stop was the revered Kamakhya Temple, one of the most important Shaktipeeths in India. The visit added a cultural and spiritual dimension to a trip that had largely been centred around Meghalaya's landscapes and outdoor experiences.
