Planning a hill station getaway for a family with children offers a wonderful chance to enjoy crisp mountain air, iconic steam train rides, and vibrant local markets. When S.R. Balasundaram and his family approached Thrillophilia, we designed an itinerary that would fit their requirements and their expectations. They set off from Chennai for a four-day holiday to Darjeeling after finalising everything, and having a well-organised travel plan ensured that every single day was comfortable and stress-free.
Our destination expert Swapnil helped the family explore various route options and finalised the booking, while Harsh Rajawat provided close follow-ups right up until the family landed at Bagdogra Airport. Pallash managed pre-travel documentation smoothly, and Sameer, the professional SUV driver, brought the journey to life with excellent on-ground service. Supported by comfortable vegetarian-friendly stays at Hotel Sumi Vista, the family experienced a thoroughly well-managed holiday from start to finish.
After the trip, Balasundaram shared his review:
"Happy to share our great journey and experience to Darjeeling! A plan became reality...It is because of Thrillophilia during May mid 2023! It all started with planning for a trip to North East. Maps, Discussions, googling.. so on! But it is Thrilliophila website that stopped us thkinking randomly. Well designed portal for all tourists. But now, where to go. By seeing lot of options thrown, which one to be chosen?? Again back to pavilion. Now came Swapnil, with whom we started communicating. Again he gave so many options! We felt traveling to every place!. Finally we decided to opt for Darjeeling - toy train trip. Till tickets booked and payments done, it was Swapnil who guided in a great way. Fantastic. Thanks to him for his patient responses and clarity in giving suggestions. Once payment done, now it is Harsh rajawat who was closely guiding us till we landed Bagdogra Airport. Thanks to Harsh for his followups. Well done. Pallash, Thanks for asking us to send scanned copies of photos,IDs... Doing all these things just before our travel — was a tense and pleasure bound activitiy. Now, it was Sameer, cab driver who started giving life to our jouney. Thanks to Sameer for your excellent services and support during travel. I can explain every moment in detail. But in short, markets trips, tiger hills, toy train trip, zoo, exhibition, buddhist temples, etc.... what not.-— memorable and still flashing every second. Our stay at Sumit Vista, gets its appreciation - stay, comforts, services etc.. On the last day of our journey, it was a blend of joy and satisfaction.... Yes. All due to thrilliphilla..... its team. KUDOS!."
Sunrise Views at Tiger Hill, Sacred Monasteries, and Wildlife Sanctuary Walks
The four-day Darjeeling holiday began as the family arrived at NJP Railway station, where a representative met them and arranged a comfortable private SUV transfer to their hotel. After checking into Hotel Sumi Vista, they spent a relaxing evening exploring the vibrant shops and lively local cafes along MG Road. On the second morning, the family rose early for a sunrise drive to Tiger Hill at an elevation of 8,482 feet, watching the first rays of dawn paint the surrounding mountain peaks in golden
Following breakfast, driver Sameer escorted the family to the famous Batasia Loop, where they sat in the manicured gardens watching the steam train loop around the hillside track. They continued their cultural exploration with visits to Ghoom Monastery, home to ancient Tibetan Buddhist artwork, and the Japanese Temple and Peace Pagoda, which offered sweeping panoramic views across the valley. The family also spent hours at the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park, getting up-close views of rare local wildlife like red pandas and snow leopards before exploring the Tibetan Refugee Centre.
Toy Train Journeys, Tea Estate Strolls, and Smooth Homeward Departures
The third day was designed as an unhurried day of leisure, allowing the family to immerse themselves deeply in Darjeeling's local culture and natural scenery. They strolled through lush green tea estates, breathing in the fresh mountain air and learning about local tea production before savoring freshly brewed cups.
A major highlight of the afternoon was riding the iconic Darjeeling Himalayan Railway on a scenic round-trip journey to Ghoom, passing through historic neighborhoods and catching views of the Ghum Railway Museum. On their fourth morning, after a hearty breakfast and check-out formalities, Sameer picked up the family in their private SUV for a smooth transfer back to NJP Railway Station for their return journey to Chennai.
