Exploring a completely new part of the country for the very first time brings a special kind of excitement. Coming from a busy city lifestyle, Abigail wanted to explore the northeast part of India with her family. This region of the country was entirely new to them- a journey into a world they had never seen before. To make sure their very first trip to this remote mountain region was comfortable and smooth, Abigail planned the holiday with Thrillophilia’s destination expert, Tanushka Jain.

The adventure kicked off with a smooth drive from the airport to Kaziranga National Park. Early the next morning, the family climbed into a rugged open jeep to explore the park's misty grasslands. The big highlight came when they spotted a giant one-horned rhino standing quietly in the brush. After the safari, they started their long drive toward Shillong, the gorgeous "Scotland of the East". On the way, they stopped by the massive Umiam Lake to take in the scenery. The blue water reflecting the bright sky was a beautiful sight for everyone. "If the entry to the hills is this beautiful, the rest of the trip will be magical," Apolonius said with a smile.

Thundering Waters and Ancient Limestone Caves

The third day took them deep into Cherrapunji, a place famous for recording the highest amount of rainfall in the country. Next came the dramatic views of the Nohkalikai Falls and Seven Sisters Falls, where waterfalls dropped down giant cliffs into the deep valleys below. They also explored the dark limestone paths of Mawsmai and Arwah Caves, navigating the rocky terrain with care. Walking through the narrow rock openings with flashlights felt like a real jungle adventure for the sisters.

Apolonius looked around the green valleys surrounding the caves and noted how refreshing the environment was. "The air here feels so clean and crisp, it is completely different from what we are used to back home," he mentioned to his wife, Vanda. She agreed with a nod and a happy smile.

The Cleanest Village and Hidden Blue Pools

A serene riverside escape in Meghalaya

On the fourth morning, the family drove down to Mawlynnong, known across the continent as the cleanest village in Asia. Walking down the quiet stone pathways lined with colorful flowers and neat bamboo dustbins, the family was deeply moved by how the local people live. "I have never seen an outdoor place so spotless in India," Abigail said to her mother as they walked past the neat houses. Vanda, agreeing with her daughter's observation, expressed her admiration for the community as well. She said, "The respect these local people have for nature is truly beautiful. It is so rare to see people preserving the environment in such a wonderful manner in India nowadays."

They then took a short walk to see the Single Decker Living Root Bridge in Riwai village, marveling at how tree roots were knit and engineered by villagers over many years to form a strong walkway across a rushing river.

From there, they drove down to the border town of Dawki to see the famous Umngot River. While the river is known for being as clear as glass, the family caught it at a time when the water was cloudy due to recent weather changes. Reflecting on this mix of experiences at the end of the journey, Abigail shared:

"The weather was pleasant which made the trip very enjoyable. Only thing Dawki water was not clear when I went. The krang shuri waterfalls was the best part."

Majestic Forest Falls and Breathtaking Canyons

Any slight disappointment about the river water vanished the very next day when they visited the Krang Shuri Waterfalls, which Abigail crowned as her absolute favorite spot. Tucked away inside a deep forest, this waterfall drops into a stunning, deep blue pool. The sight of the water cascading against the green trees was breathtaking, making the short trek down completely worth it. They followed this up with a hike along the massive ridges of Laitlum Canyon, looking down into endless valleys wrapped in soft white fog.

On their final morning, they visited the ancient Kamakhya Devi Temple in Guwahati to seek blessings. After exploring the sacred complex, they headed directly to the airport for their flight home. They returned with a newfound respect for the mountain culture and a deep appreciation for the pristine beauty of the Northeast.
