A solo adventure across the Eastern Himalayas is bound to alter one’s life and perception. For the 27-year-old Guru Prakash, a 7-day solo vacation through Sikkim and Darjeeling did exactly that. Recognising the importance of safety and comfort, Guru mapped out his route with Thrillophilia’s destination specialist, Manmohan Chaturvedi. Together, they curated a package featuring a sturdy, private SUV and strategically mapped deluxe hotel stays, allowing Guru to focus completely on the beautiful scenery.

The trip started with a long, winding drive from the plains up to the mountain capital of Gangtok. From day one, the expertise of the ground crew proved to be the backbone of the entire vacation. Guru later highlighted his appreciation for the seamless operations and professional drivers in an enthusiastic review:

"It was awesome and pleasant trip, especially my drivers are very skilful felt a safe journey even in fog & across landslide areas. Thanks to all my drivers during the trip. Stay was good and hygenic, thanks to all backend team for locating each stay in appropriate place. (Like the stay of first day is distant and peacefull and last day is right near mall road for shopping) all perfectly planned. Thanks."

High-Altitude Lakes and Strategic Solitude in Gangtok

Guru’s first couple of nights were spent in a deluxe hotel thoughtfully positioned away from the crowded city center, offering a tranquil introduction to the mountains. The next morning, he and his skilled SUV driver navigated the steep, winding mountain terrain up to the stunning Tsomgo Lake. Nestled at an altitude of over 12,000 feet, the high-altitude glacial lake offered a crisp, misty atmosphere.

From the lake, the journey continued to the famous Baba Mandir, a sacred shrine built to pay respect to soldier Baba Harbhajan Singh, whose spirit is believed to be still roaming there helping the on-duty soldiers. Throughout the high-altitude drive, dense patches of mountain fog threatened visibility, and the roads bore signs of recent monsoon landslides. However, the driver’s calm demeanor and exceptional steering skills ensured a completely stable and secure journey back to the peaceful sanctuary of his hotel.

Cultural Encounters in Pelling and the Buzz of Darjeeling's Mall Road

The serene Shiva shrine nestled beside a majestic waterfall became a spiritual highlight of Guru Prakash's Sikkim journey

The following day, Guru checked out of Gangtok to journey toward Pelling. En route, the SUV stopped at Ravangla, where Guru visited the magnificent Buddha Park to admire the towering, serene 130-foot-tall Shakyamuni Buddha statue against a backdrop of rolling hills. From the next day, he began the rich sightseeing tours around Pelling.

Guru explored the mystical, wish-fulfilling Kecheopalri Lake, followed by stops at the roaring Rimbi and Kanchenjunga Waterfalls. Walking among the ancient stones of the Rabdentse Ruins and visiting the quiet halls of Pemayangtse Monastery offered a peaceful window into Sikkim’s royal past.

The final phase of the trip began with a scenic drive across the state border to Darjeeling. Here, Thrillophilia’s backend planning showed its brilliant strategy. In contrast to the isolated tranquility of his first stay, his deluxe hotel in Darjeeling was situated right near the vibrant, bustling Mall Road. The following morning, Guru woke up before dawn for the legendary drive up to Tiger Hill. The SUV navigated the early morning mountain mist effortlessly, arriving just in time for Guru to witness the sun rise over the monumental Kanchenjunga range. He quickly walked up the final stretch to reach the viewing station,, which was filled with people even on a week day! But once the sun started to rise, he understood why it is so famous-

The peaks first bathed in hues of navy blue, then red, then orange, and then a shade of brilliant gold. The sight of the ighty kanchenjungha was too good to be true. After spending around an hour there, he returned to his hotel, freshened up and rested. The final afternoon was dedicated to visiting the Batasia Loop, the historic Ghoom Monastery, and the Darjeeling Zoo, before stepping right out of his hotel onto Mall Road for an evening of local souvenir shopping and café hopping. The day after, he was taken safely back to Bagdogra Airport for his flight back home.
