A family holiday in the mountains is all about magical discoveries, beautiful landscapes, and sharing laughs away from the routine of daily life. Ranjit Kumar, with his partner Rakhi, and their teenagers- Simran and Jeetu- spent their 5-day mountain escape in Northeast India to build lifelong memories together. Travelling through the winding, steep terrains of Sikkim and West Bengal requires absolute driving precision and dependable ground support. To make sure the trip went off smoothly, Ranjit coordinated the booking with Thrillophilia’s destination expert, Shashwat Jain. Together, they arranged for a private vehicle driven by a highly skilled local captain and handpicked comfortable stays like the Seven Mirror Hotel in Gangtok and the Golden White Yak in Darjeeling.

The family's journey started on November 2, 2024, with a smooth pickup that took them through the lush, green landscapes toward Gangtok. Along the route, they watched the rushing waters of the Teesta River, taking in the crisp mountain air that welcomed them to the East. The core of their wonderful experience came down to the stress-free travel management provided on the ground. Ranjit later summarised their satisfaction with the overall logistics in a concise, direct review:

"Services and driver corporation"

Chilly Winds at Baba Mandir and Glacial Lake Views

The second day of the trip took the family high into the clouds for an adventurous day excursion from Gangtok. The private car navigated the sharp hairpin turns effortlessly up to the legendary Tsomgo Lake, also known as Changu Lake. The children, Simran and Jeetu, were amazed by the high-altitude glacial lake, and they could not stop capturing beautiful photos of the lake against the dramatic mountain backdrop.

From the lake, they drove further up to visit the famous Baba Mandir, a sacred shrine built in honor of soldier Harbhajan Singh. When the family stepped out of the vehicle at the top, they were greeted by an incredibly cold and windy climate. The freezing mountain gusts had everyone shivering, but the family bundled up in their jackets and walked through the complex, deeply moved by the history and spiritual aura of the temple. After reaching their, they got to know about the Old Baba Mandir that is situated further ahead, but since they could not secure their permissing on the same day, they had to drop the plan. They though thtat they should keep something explored, so that they could return to this fantastic destination once again!

Colorful Outfits and Family Poses in the Tea Gardens

Ranjit & his Partner embraced Sikkim's vibrant culture by dressing in traditional attire and celebrating the region's rich heritage

On the third morning, the family checked out of Gangtok and enjoyed a scenic drive to the "Queen of the Hills," Darjeeling. The private vehicle cruised past sprawling emerald tea estates, where the family decided to stop and immerse themselves in the local culture. They rented traditional, vibrant costumes, laughing together as they helped each other tie the colorful fabrics. Standing amidst the neat rows of tea bushes with the snow-peaked mountains visible in the distance, they posed for a series of unforgettable family photographs.

The fourth day brought the ultimate Darjeeling sightseeing experience, starting with an early morning drive up Tiger Hill. Standing together in the chilly dawn, the family watched the sun rise over the monumental Mt. Kanchenjunga, painting the snow in glowing shades of gold. Afterward, they explored the engineering marvel of the Batasia Loop and visited the historic Ghoom Monastery, home to a massive 15-foot-high statue of the Maitreya Buddha.

The fun hit a high point when they arrived at the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute and Darjeeling Zoo. Simran and Jeetu dragged the parents along as they explored the wildlife exhibits, and the whole family had a blast making funny poses in front of the animal enclosures, filling the afternoon with non-stop giggles. Later in the day, they took a peaceful, romantic walk through a nearby pine forest. Walking beneath the towering trees lined with thousands of colorful, fluttering Tibetan prayer flags, Ranjit and his family felt a deep sense of serenity. On their final morning, they packed their bags full of smiles as their driver transferred them smoothly back to the station, bringing their mountain vacation to a perfect close.
