For Jose Paul, eight days across Sikkim and Darjeeling brought together the quieter and more dramatic sides of the Eastern Himalayas. The journey moved from Gangtok’s monasteries and viewpoints to the high-altitude landscapes around Tsomgo Lake, then onwards to Pelling’s waterfalls, sacred sites and mountain views before ending in Darjeeling.

What stood out for Jose was the sheer variety of experiences along the way. Buddhist monasteries offered moments of calm, while waterfalls, Himalayan viewpoints and high mountain roads kept the landscape constantly changing. In Darjeeling, the journey added another dimension through mountaineering history, wildlife and the region’s famous tea gardens.

Gangtok Opened the Journey with Mountains

The road from NJP Railway Station or Bagdogra Airport to Gangtok follows the Teesta River, gradually replacing the plains with the mountain landscapes of Sikkim. Once in Gangtok, Jose could explore MG Marg, the pedestrian-friendly heart of the capital, before beginning a full day of local sightseeing.

The itinerary brought together several viewpoints and cultural landmarks. At Tashi Viewpoint, the Kanchenjunga range formed the backdrop, while Ganesh Tok and Hanuman Tok offered elevated views over Gangtok. The Institute of Tibetology provided insight into Tibetan Buddhist culture and Himalayan scholarship, followed by the peaceful surroundings of Dro-Dul Chorten Monastery. The day continued through the Cottage and Handicraft Centre, Flower Exhibition Centre and waterfalls, including Ban Jhakri Falls, Lhasa Waterfalls and Bakthang Waterfalls.

Higher Into the Himalayas at Tsomgo Lake

The next morning took Jose towards Tsomgo Lake, also known as Changu Lake, at an altitude of around 12,400 feet. Surrounded by steep mountain slopes, the glacial lake is one of Sikkim’s best-known high-altitude landmarks and holds significance in local Buddhist traditions.

The journey continued to Baba Harbhajan Singh Temple, associated with the legend of an Indian soldier believed to protect troops stationed in the difficult terrain of the Eastern Himalayas. The optional visit to Nathula Pass, located on the India-China border, offered another glimpse into the strategic importance of the region.

Pelling Brought Together Sacred Lakes and Waterfalls

From Gangtok, Jose travelled towards Pelling via Namchi, with the road offering repeated views of the Kanchenjunga range. At Namchi, Char Dham brought together replicas of the four major pilgrimage destinations of India around a 108-foot statue of Lord Shiva.

Pelling then shifted the focus towards Sikkim’s natural and spiritual heritage. Khecheopalri Lake, revered in both Buddhist and Hindu traditions, was followed by Khecheopalri Monastery and Pemayangtse Monastery. The day also included Rimbi Waterfall and Kanchenjunga Waterfall before moving into Sikkim’s history at the Rabdentse Ruins, the remains of the former capital of the Kingdom of Sikkim. The monasteries, forests, waterfalls and mountain views captured much of what Jose appreciated about the region.

Darjeeling Added History, Wildlife and Tea

The road from Pelling to Darjeeling brought another change in scenery, with Himalayan valleys and tea gardens appearing along the route. The following morning began before sunrise, with a drive to Tiger Hill around 4 AM. From the summit, the first light of day spread across the Himalayan peaks, with Mount Kanchenjunga forming the centrepiece of the view.

The rest of the day was spent exploring Darjeeling from several perspectives. At Batasia Loop, the railway curves around a landscaped area offering wide views of the surrounding mountains, while Ghoom Monastery houses a 15-foot Maitreya Buddha statue. The Himalayan Mountaineering Institute and Tenzing Rock connected the destination to the history of Himalayan expeditions, while the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park offered the chance to see the endangered red panda. The visit continued through Darjeeling’s tea estates, the Japanese Temple and Peace Pagoda, and the Tibetan Refugee Centre, where local handicrafts are made and sold.

Eight Days Across the Eastern Himalayas

By the time Jose’s journey reached its final transfer towards Siliguri and NJP, the trip had covered several distinct landscapes and experiences. Gangtok brought Buddhist monasteries, viewpoints and waterfalls; the road to Tsomgo Lake introduced the high-altitude Himalayas. Pelling offered sacred sites, history and dramatic natural scenery, and Darjeeling added mountaineering heritage, wildlife and tea culture.

For Jose, the calm atmosphere of the monasteries sat alongside the excitement of mountain viewpoints and waterfalls, while places such as the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute and Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park added depth to the journey. It was a trip that allowed him to experience the Eastern Himalayas through both their landscapes and their stories.
