Glacial Waters, High Mountain Shrines, and the Ascent to Lachen

The journey started with a long drive going up from Bagdogra airport along the bright blue Teesta River. The road twisted through thick green forests before reaching the steep mountainsides of Gangtok. As the car climbed higher, the warm air from the plains turned into a crisp, cool breeze. When evening came, Meenakshi took a slow walk down MG Marg. The wide street was brightly lit, clean, and free of cars, making it completely safe for a relaxed evening stroll. The cool mountain air smelled like hot steamed momos and warm noodle soup from the nearby shops.

The second day brought an early morning drive up to Tsomgo Lake, situated high at 12,400 feet above sea level. The cold glacial water reflected the grey sky like a giant mirror, creating a quiet space to take in the views. A short drive further along the winding pass roads brought her to Baba Mandir, a sacred shrine honoring Major Harbhajan Singh. She also passed near the misty mountain ridges of Nathu La Pass before returning to Gangtok for the night.

On the third day, the route headed deep into North Sikkim toward Lachen, a peaceful village perched at 9,500 feet. The long scenic drive offered panoramic views of snow-capped peaks and alpine meadows. Along the way, the vehicle stopped at the Singhik Viewpoint to look out toward Mount Kanchenjunga, crossed the hamlet of Chungthang, and paused near the rushing waters of Naga Falls. Upon reaching Lachen in the evening, a warm dinner and a cozy hotel room were ready for her arrival. The trip was truly magical for her, and she was eagerly looking forward to the days lying ahead of her!

High Alpine Lakes, Flower Valleys, and the Journey Back

The fourth day began at six in the morning with a drive toward Gurudongmar Lake, one of the highest lakes in the world at 17,800 feet above sea level. After a quick stop for breakfast at Thangu, the road opened up into vast, snow-dusted plateaus. Reaching the glacial lake revealed calm blue waters framed by massive frozen peaks. After taking in the high-altitude landscape, Meenakshi traveled back down through Lachen Chu and Lachung Chu at Chungthang to reach Lachung for an overnight stay.

On the fifth day, she visited the famous Yumthang Valley, widely known as the Valley of Flowers. The high valley was filled with views of rolling meadows, grazing yaks, natural hot springs, and river tributaries. After exploring the colorful landscapes and capturing photos of local rhododendrons, she boarded her vehicle for the comfortable transfer back to Gangtok.
