America is a country that makes more sense from a car window than from a map.

The distances between cities are real in a way that Indian travellers often underestimate before they land. San Francisco to Los Angeles is not a quick drive. Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon takes most of a day. The scale of the country only becomes clear once you are sitting inside a vehicle watching the landscape change for hours at a stretch.

Anil Agarwal and Usha Agarwal spent sixteen days moving through five American cities in July. Part of a larger group of eight split across four bookings but travelling as a couple with their own rhythm through each destination.

The Grand Canyon by road is the line that stayed. Of everything in sixteen days across five cities, it was that particular journey across the desert floor that held.

San Francisco opened the trip

Day one was the GoCar tour. A one-hour audio-guided vehicle tour that runs through the main San Francisco landmarks, designed so you can cover the city at your own pace rather than on someone else's schedule. The California Academy of Sciences followed in the afternoon. Four floors of natural history, a planetarium, an aquarium and a living roof. The kind of museum you walk into planning to spend an hour and come out two and a half hours later.

Day two was Alcatraz, Muir Woods and Sausalito in a single long day from an 8:30 AM start. The Muir Woods leg runs through redwood groves that are genuinely difficult to photograph because the trees are wider than the frame. Then, the ferry to Alcatraz Island, the cellhouse audio tour that runs room by room through the history of the prison. Sausalito, after that, the small waterfront town across the bay from San Francisco, before the transfer back to the city.

Los Angeles Had the Range

Day three was a rest day in Los Angeles after the transit from San Francisco. Day four was the Hollywood Night Tour with the Griffith Observatory at the end. The observatory sits on the south face of Mount Hollywood, and on a clear July evening, the Los Angeles basin stretches out below it in every direction.

Day five was Palm Springs. The aerial tramway climbs 1,700 metres in ten minutes from the desert floor to the San Jacinto Mountains. At the top, it is thirty degrees cooler than at the base. Most first-time visitors stand at the top in shorts and immediately understand why the information board warned them about the temperature change.

Day six was Universal Studios Hollywood. One full day, all the themed zones, and all the rides that were worth doing. July is busy. The queues are real. The Wizarding World still earns its place.

San Diego Was One Day and Worth It

Day seven was a single day in San Diego with the SEAL tour in the afternoon. The amphibious vehicle that starts as a bus, drives through the downtown landmarks, and then enters the harbour and becomes a boat. The harbour portion runs past the aircraft carrier and the naval base. The full tour runs a hundred minutes and covers both city and water without making either feel rushed.

Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon

Two leisure days in Las Vegas on either side of the packed activity days gave Anil and Usha time to move at their own pace on the Strip. The High Roller observation wheel on day nine, the tallest Ferris wheel in the world at the time of its opening, with a thirty-minute rotation that takes you 167 metres above the Strip. The Eiffel Tower Experience at the Paris Las Vegas hotel in the afternoon.

Day ten was the Grand Canyon West tour. Seven Magic Mountains on the way out of the city, the multi-coloured boulder stacks rising from the Mojave Desert floor. The top of Hoover Dam, with the Colorado River below and the Nevada-Arizona state line running across the structure. Then the drive into the canyon on the Grand Canyon West Rim.

The drive through Grand Canyon West is the part Anil mentioned. The road that descends into the canyon geology, the layers of red and ochre and grey rock marking hundreds of millions of years, and the sense of scale that comes from being inside the canyon rather than looking down at it from the rim. That specific experience, being in a vehicle on that road with the canyon walls rising on both sides, is the one he carried home.

Day eleven was the Emerald Cave kayaking tour from Las Vegas. A shuttle out to Willow Beach, then kayaks through a slot canyon on the Colorado River to the Emerald Cave, named for the turquoise light that fills it at midday.

New York Closed Five Cities in Sixteen Days

The flight from Las Vegas to LaGuardia and the private minibus to the Hilton Garden Inn near Times Square. Day twelve's afternoon went to SUMMIT One Vanderbilt, the immersive observation experience on the 93rd floor of the tower next to Grand Central Station.

Day fourteen was the Edge Observation Deck at Hudson Yards in the morning, with the glass floor sections that extend over the 30th-floor drop, and the Statue of Liberty Express Tour in the afternoon. The boat goes around the island without docking, close enough to see the torch detail and the stone base.

Two leisure days in New York and then the private minibus to JFK for the flight home.

How Thrillophilia Held Sixteen Days Together
